Steve Hurst’s one of a kind 3 door “Plymouth Compromise”! 1963 3 Door Plymouth/Steve Hurst
Arnolds Park, Iowa

Steve Hurst, Jan. 2008

I found the original car in South Dakota and purchased it from a fellow Mopar man.  My wife and I bought it and drove it home to Iowa in 2003.  The fuel gauge did not work and the front end was out of alignment, other than that, it ran fine.  When we got it home, I told my wife I was going to make it into a 2-door sedan; she thought it was too good to cut up, so for 2 summers, we drove it as is.

In the winter of 2005, I started the bodywork without her knowledge.  I had another Plymouth about the same color sitting in my shop that I could use for parts.  My body guy and I worked on it for 2 winters, finishing it up just before our local county fair in September of 2007.

(I am a member of our local Antique Car Club. They always have a antique display at the fair and I was asked to add my car to it this year.)
We started calling it our 1963 Plymouth Compromise.  The “compromise” comes in because my wife wanted it left as a four door saying we were older now and had grandchildren so we needed the extra doors…I still think of myself as a young man and wanted the 2 door sporty look…thus, we compromised and both got what we wanted!

Most of the work was done in my own shop with a great body guy coming in at night to do most of the fine body work, while I did most of the cutting and cannibalizing from the parts car.  A good friend of mine did the interior and what a beautiful job he did!  The front seat is out of a 2-door with the back seat from the original 4-door.  It has the original 3 speed transmission and slant 6 motor in it.  I have no plans on changing those.

Most people, when looking at it, ask where did we ever find such a rare car!
